KTR and Giant Barb participate in independent Greenhouse Gas Inventory verification at Dai Hung Field

Thg9 18, 2026

On 11 September 2026 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Nam Con Son Petroleum Exploration and Production Branch (PVEP-NCS), a branch of Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP), held a workshop and certificate presentation ceremony for the methodology, greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory data, and GHG emission-reduction measures at Dai Hung Field, Block 05-1(a).

Behind this milestone was an independent third-party verification of PVEP-NCS's GHG assertions. PVEP-NCS engaged Giant Barb Science & Environment Joint Stock Company (GB) and the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR) to perform this work in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019, ISO 14064-1:2018, the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, and emission factors applicable in Vietnam.

From inventory to emission-reduction solutions

The four components within the verification scope form an integrated emissions-management chain: the organisational GHG inventory provides baseline emissions data; two emission-reduction projects are assessed using defined data and methodologies; and the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, targets, and emission-reduction plan provide a basis for PVEP-NCS to guide measures in subsequent phases.

First, the inventory of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from offshore and onshore operations helps PVEP-NCS establish an organisation-wide emissions profile. This is an important input for identifying material emission sources, tracking changes between reporting periods, and assessing the effectiveness of mitigation measures.

For the produced-water treatment system modification project on the FPU-DH01, the verification report confirmed that the solution contributed to reducing the need to heat crude oil on the floating storage unit, thereby lowering fuel-oil consumption. For the Dai Hung gas-collection project, the verification team confirmed that the associated-gas collection and transportation system from WHP-DH2 to BK-TNG had been installed and was in operation.

In addition to verified emission-reduction results, the report also considered PVEP-NCS's BAU emissions scenario, targets, and emission-reduction plan through 2025, with a vision to 2045. This supports the company in assessing emissions trends and selecting appropriate measures, including energy efficiency, reduced flaring, and optimised associated-gas utilisation. Future targets, scenarios, and plans should be distinguished from emission-reduction results verified for 2023–2024.

Accordingly, the value of inventory and verification lies not only in confirming figures, but also in establishing the data foundation and evidence that enable PVEP-NCS to continue managing emissions, evaluating operational measures, and implementing appropriate mitigation actions.

Implications for carbon management in Vietnam's oil and gas sector

The completion of the methodology at Dai Hung Field illustrates how GHG inventorying is evolving from a reporting requirement into an operational management tool—supported by evidence, site inspection, and an independent verification opinion. A data system with a clear methodology and verifiable results enables a company to identify emission sources accurately, quantify the effectiveness of each measure, and prioritise emission-reduction investments with stronger practical feasibility. The Dai Hung experience may also offer a useful reference for other onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities.

The Dai Hung project also provided an opportunity for the KTR–GB consortium to demonstrate its capabilities and an effective cooperation model between domestic and international organisations with GHG inventory and verification expertise. This creates a foundation for further improving emissions-data quality, translating mitigation measures into practice, and contributing to the green transition of Vietnam's oil and gas sector.
